Overview of Course:
Theatre Arts I promotes learning the essential vocabulary and processes of theatre through reading, writing, and researching. We will cover topics involving theatre literature, acting, and technical theatre. Acting experience in this course includes, but is not limited to, exploring the concepts of self, body and voice work. Students will have opportunities for practical application of knowledge in informal class productions. This course is designed to develop creativity and spontaneity in students wanting to explore theatre, those wishing to commit to a theatre program, and for students who simply want to learn to be more comfortable in their own skin. Skills learned in this course will carry on into your everyday life. Theatre I is an exciting class and I am eager to work with every student enrolled.
Theatre Arts 1 is an introductory course designed to introduce students to the various elements of the theatre and to encourage students in further participation. Students will examine and study the role that acting, directing, and technical elements have on a production. The main goal of this course is to have students become more comfortable in their own skin and feel better about speaking in front of people. They will also learn basic approaches to working comfortably on the stage, through the use of warm-ups, monologues, scene work, pantomime, and improvisation. Basic techniques of movement, voice projection, character development, and performance will be also be taught. Students will also learn about the effects of vocal health and its effects on performers. Students will be required to view and analyze one professional production during the semester.
